ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching & Mentoring in Management
Who is it for?
This Level 5 qualification in Coaching and Mentoring aims to provide practicing managers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to perform effectively as coaches or mentors as part of their normal work role.
The Programme (3 Days)
3 days of tutorial support (one month apart) with a blend of guided learning, coaching practice and a final portfolio submission. Candidates are introduced to a range of coaching tools and techniques, as well as assessment tools to encourage reflective practice. The programme tutorials are complimented with actual coaching in the workplace, which is assessed. Woven into this is a work-based assignment structured around designing and building a workplace coaching and mentoring programme.
The 3 mandatory units of:
• Understanding how management coaching and mentoring can benefit organisations and individuals
• Reviewing your own ability as a coach or mentor
• Undertaking management coaching or mentoring in the workplace*
Participants are expected to take around 12 hours of planned and monitored Coaching.
Assessment
ILM has an excellent track record of robust qualifications. Their assessment methodology is diligent and thorough. This level 5 qualification has two assessment methodologies all of which must be completed to the standards and satisfaction of the ILM Assessor and External Verifier.
• Participants must complete a Work-based Assignment
• A Coaching Diary with records of coaching sessions and reflections on by the participant is also assessed
Academic Supervision
There are 3 telephone supervision sessions attached to the programme. These are designed to support the guided learning that the participants receive on the tutorials and to support the completion of the assessed elements.

Notes for Coaches, Mentoring
by Peter Hill
Peter Hill’s “Mentoring” is a clear, concise, well laid out reference guide with good definitions of mentoring and coaching outlining the differences, similarities and overlaps. It is a very practical book for both mentor and mentee. I recommend it to anyone learning for the first time or seeking a refresher on mentoring, what the role of a mentor is, the skills of a mentor, how to manage the process as well as some case study examples of how some people use a mentor.
