View From The Hill

Where did that year go? Hopefully you have had a good one, despite the economic climate! I have always maintained that if everybody in the world became a coach (and used coaching effectively) there still would not be enough coaches. I think that this last year has shown us this.

But what is new in coaching that can help us get better? In the early 1990’s, at the Industrial Society, we jointly sponsored a conference on Leadership, Coaching and the Learning Revolution with Linkage. Gordon Dryden and Dr Janette Vos spoke eloquently on the research available at the time. I have seen this research validated in person on a number of occasions; functional MRI scans, the growth of the cerebellum in a young girl and the difference it has made to her, the difference working with the brain has made to numerous sporting teams, as well as how it has enhanced my own understanding of what happens when we coach.

In November 2011 in San Francisco the NeuroLeadeship Summit had no less than 39 scientific and academic speakers looking into this whole subject. The growth of our understanding in this area is immense and what we make of it. Whilst I didn’t get to San Francisco, I often look at the blogs* http://blog.neuroleadership.org/

In particular, it looks at not only what we learn but how we can challenge ourselves with this latest thinking. This is what we need to focus on in the turbulent times. Bob Johanson spoke about VUCA a military term for looking through a lens of Volatility, Uncertainty, Change & Ambiguity whilst still being able to focus on the positive lens of Focus, Understanding and Action. Wise words as we move into 2012!

We can face the challenges better if we have given our brain a bit of a work out first and have taken time out to relax over Christmas. So enjoy the Festive break we hope to see you soon in 2012.

Have a good month.
