Newsletter January 2013: Pause for Reflection

View From The Hill

New Year – New Things! Happy New Year to all I hope 2013 delivers on your expectations.

Like most people, I had an inkling to do something new in 2013.  So Fiona and I went to the cinema to see Life of Pi in 3D. The 3D was incredible! But the story was what really gripped us. So much for something new…within minutes I was making comparisons in my head between the story and coaching (you may be forgiven if the word anorak has just popped into your head). But the metaphor of the voyage, finding oneself, visualisation, the cathartic experience of storytelling, triumph over adversity, reflection, the balance of good and bad and feeling & thinking are all there.

The next day I was consumed with reflection on various parts of the film, their impact on life in general and the lessons to be learned.

So my question here is, are we so resolute about our new year’s intentions that we miss the learning that can come if we succeed? Or indeed do we just put failure down to experience, custom and practice.

A typical coach would look beyond the resolution to seek out the wealth of potential that can make a two hour fantastic film extend to at least a day’s reflection and a lifetime of added value in terms of experience.

Have a great month everyone
