Motivational Interviewing has been defined as, ‘A collaborative conversation to strengthen a person’s own motivation for and commitment to change’. The purpose of this brief workshop is to provide an overview of the principal messages and insights from MI as to how practitioners may guide the ebb and flow of delicate conversations – especially with people uncertain as to what to do and how to do it. The intention is to blend the theoretical with the practical, providing opportunities to explore critical phenomena in conversation and the role of the practitioner in promoting change.
The three sections of the workshop will be:
The challenges and pitfalls of talking about change
A few simple lessons from MI
Some guidelines for better practice
The themes of the workshop will include: the nature and causes of discord and resistance; the connections between what people say and what they do as a consequence; how practitioners may influence behaviour through conversation; the recommended practitioner behaviours for increasing the likelihood of positive change.
12 noon Buffet lunch and networking CPD Certificates will be issued at the end of the event and credits can be used towards EIA registration
