Coach of the Month - March

Eileen McLaren Name

Eileen McLaren

Company

Working for a Financial services company.

Background

Around 20 years experience primarily in IT project and programme management. I have worked mainly in the Financial services sector working my way through the ranks into management. The aspect I enjoyed most was the people management and development, seeing people progress and helping them along the way. I was never as keen on the administration side of project management!
I have also previously run my own company providing coaching and management consultancy, however decided to return to a management role, again in Financial Services as I prefer to work within an office and team environment, and use my coaching to develop my staff.

What Inspired You To Go Into Coaching?

Initially I was looking for something to aid my personal development. It’s always a challenge to find something that will be both interesting and stretching. At the time the company I worked for was looking at developing coaches and helping them obtain a qualification. After looking at this I thought it sounded interesting so decided to give it a go. It didn’t take long to realise I had definitely made the right choice and also my focus changed from my development to helping others develop. Of course you have to keep developing yourself but that’s easier when you enjoy the area so much.

Key Qualifications & Training

All my training and qualifications have been with CFM, specifically the Certificate in Performance Coaching, and keeping up to date with development and new areas.

Specialist Areas of Coaching

I don’t really specialise in any areas, however I most enjoy coaching others in their development or specific problem areas they have in their work life. I do tend to find I work a lot with new managers and help them develop into the role.

Recommended Reading

The Tao of Coaching by Max Landsberg . This was the first book I read on coaching and it has stayed with me, its small, easy to read and really gets the points across, giving food for thought.
Also Coaching for Performance by Peter Hill…..the person who inspired me to be a coach!

Greatest Coaching Moment

I was working with a new manager and looking specifically at an area in planning. We worked through, using the Grow model mainly, and spent about 50 minutes exploring and coming to conclusions, with actions that were to be followed up. My client at the end of the session thanked me profusely for my help and all the things I had told her to do! This came as a bit of a surprise to me as I hadn’t been aware in this case of telling her to do anything. We talked about this and she was even more pleased to realise that actually she had come up with all the ideas herself. All I had done was help with questions and prompts. This to me summed up what its all about….helping others help themselves!

What Is Your Vision For Your Coaching?

…and I guess that’s my vision! It gives me most satisfaction to see that I have helped someone to achieve something they want to do through coaching and that’s what I always strive to do.

Philosophy

That you can do anything you want to do, but sometimes you need a push in the right direction, or someone to help you, either to get started or to overcome a hurdle. We all have so much untapped potential, it would be great to find a way to turn the tap on!
