Coach of the Month - April

Jackie Scutt Name

Jackie Scutt

Company

I run my own business as a coach, mentor, facilitator and consultant. I am former Director of the Social Enterprise Academy, a partner with CFM offering coaching for social innovation.

Background

I have a professional background in education. For the last ten years, in the field of social enterprise, I have led key organisational developments and managed service delivery from both management and consultancy positions. I find coaching approaches effective in driving social change – to work with the passion, vision and energy people bring to it.

Four years ago, I was tasked with setting up the Social Enterprise Academy from scratch to create a peer learning culture in the social economy. Having driven the Academy through its successful first four years, I decided to start my own consultancy.

What Inspired You To Go Into Coaching?

I’m inspired by the possibilities that people have within themselves. There are lots of us who want to make a difference but can’t always see how to do it. This might involve discovering a new interest or skill, a career change, finding the way you work best in the job you have or getting the work-life balance right. It’s about personal and professional fulfilment and the feeling that you are doing something worthwhile.

I also like to work with groups and organisations, supporting people to work across silos, increase their leadership capacity and create a vibrant organisational culture.

Key Qualifications & Training

I am a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership & Management. My Diploma in Management Coaching and Mentoring was achieved with CFM. I have a first degree in English, an MA in Education and a Certificate in Accounting gained along the way in my management career.

Specialist Areas of Coaching

Coaching for social innovation
Leadership development
Organisational development
Personal coaching and mentoring for performance, career development, life change, life-work balance

Recommended Reading

If You Fall … It’s a New Beginning by Karen Darke

This is a book written by a colleague and friend about her own life journey starting with an actual fall from a cliff-face that left her paralysed from the chest down. It’s about facing the physical, mental and emotional challenges of that fall and working with it as a new beginning. I find that you can learn a great deal from personal stories.

The Scot’s Crisis of Confidence by Carol Craig

In this book, Carol Craig uses the Myers Briggs Type Indicators to analyse Scotland’s culture. Carol subsequently set up the Centre for Confidence and Well Being which promotes positive psychology as an influence on our approach to health and education. I attended the Centre’s first Vanguard programme in 2005 and have since incorporated much of the learning into my own practice.

Greatest Coaching Moment

I get a real buzz when someone I’ve been coaching achieves their goal or gets the promotion they’ve worked for, but any “ah-ha” moment is tremendous.

What Is Your Vision For Your Coaching?

I am delighted to have opened up space in my life for coaching now. Before, it was something that was squeezed into a busy life juggling the priorities of a Chief Exec. Now it’s my primary focus.

I will work with a wide range of people both within their organisations and as individuals. I am also looking at setting up residential retreats for small groups.

Philosophy

I am more and more aware of the value of time for reflection. The pace of life is so demanding now that as leaders, managers and people, thinking time is a luxury. We are busy doing, doing, doing. This can mean that we operate in reactive mode rather than finding the best solutions for ourselves, for others and for our organisations. Coaching is about creating a space for quality time to reflect and become more mindful about our actions, our decisions, our choices.

Client's Corner

Carol Bishop, Sky

Sky“Having completed my coaching diploma with CFM I figured I was prepared for everything. I had a truckload of new ideas, a real confidence in my ability to use them and the perfect opportunity… enter Paula Renton from Sky’s Graduate programme. Paula was very anxious about taking calls on the IT helpdesk. Over the course of our three sessions Paula overcame barriers that prevented her taking that first call, reviewed and assessed her own calls and initiated her own action plans.

“What I was not prepared for were the feelings evoked following each of my sessions, I felt inspired motivated, curious, alive setting my hat at a jaunty angle whilst whistling a jolly tune!”

Quote from Paula Renton, Sky:

“The coaching sessions were a pleasure from start to finish, and the benefits have been obvious, I can really feel an improvement in several aspects of my job. The informal atmosphere made the learning process feel very natural, and in the end, I gained so much more from the sessions than the soft skills I had initially set out to learn.”
