Profile
After completing my first formal sessions as a coach in the workplace, I sat back and reflected on my experience. I considered all kinds of words to describe my voyage; some of them sounded high level and even academic at times. However, the truth of the matter is that for me it was personally challenging and professionally enlightening.
Why was it challenging for me? As someone coming from the traditional professional type model of HRM/HRD where individual support is more commonly the giving of advice in terms policy, practice and procedures or to the show, tell, observe model of training. To be in a position where I had to let the coachees think for themselves, to allow them space to reflect and come up with their own solutions was a very different place for me to be. What was most difficult for me was allowing the coachee’s time to reflect asses and gain perspective. This was why I found it challenging – I had to let go of that certain amount of control and directive style and trust them to work it out for themselves.
Professionally enlightning? Coaching for me was an affirming experience. It reinforced that individuals (coachees) are able to perform at their best with the assistance of someone who will challenge, stimulate and guide them to keep growing. Throughout this journey I have seen individuals excited and inspired to achieve their goals.
The great German Philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said “Knowing is not enough; we must apply: Willing is not enough; we must do” On my voyage I have seen many of these doing individuals and I thank them for enabling me to realise the full potential of coaching.

Notes for Coaches, Mentoring
by Peter Hill
Peter Hill’s “Mentoring” is a clear, concise, well laid out reference guide with good definitions of mentoring and coaching outlining the differences, similarities and overlaps. It is a very practical book for both mentor and mentee. I recommend it to anyone learning for the first time or seeking a refresher on mentoring, what the role of a mentor is, the skills of a mentor, how to manage the process as well as some case study examples of how some people use a mentor.
