View From The Hill
I gave the film Jerry Maguire a run out the other night and was reminded of the infamous "Mission Statement" theme that runs through the movie. It got me thinking about the ultimate mission of the coach to...liberate? educate? inspire? deliver? So, what words would you use to set out your mission that had the same impact as Jerry Maguire? More to the point how robust are your values and principles to make your mission hold fast?
Jerry, like all of us is only human and he abandons his principles when he marries Dorothy despite sage advice from Rod Tidswell to "have the talk". After many trials and tribulations, including separating from Dorothy, he has an experiential epiphany of "not being complete". He returns to Dorothy and confronts his principles and vocalises his mission – embarrassingly so in front of a self help group. And all ends well.
We see lots of people come through our courses and they construct their contracts and codes of practice some with ease and some with difficulty. I am now wondering how many have given thought to their mission as a coach and what would cause them to revisit it like Jerry? Also, as a coach – "what completes you?" Answers on a postcard (or e-mail)! Have a good month.

Notes for Coaches, Mentoring
by Peter Hill
Peter Hill’s “Mentoring” is a clear, concise, well laid out reference guide with good definitions of mentoring and coaching outlining the differences, similarities and overlaps. It is a very practical book for both mentor and mentee. I recommend it to anyone learning for the first time or seeking a refresher on mentoring, what the role of a mentor is, the skills of a mentor, how to manage the process as well as some case study examples of how some people use a mentor.
